While the festive season can be a really enjoyable time of year it can also be very stressful. But how we approach the festive season can make all the difference.

Here are my 4 best tips for enjoying a relaxing and stress free festive season:

Set an intention of how you’d like the festive season to feel for you 

Just thinking of one or two feeling words that you’d like to experience this festive season can help you set the tone. My words are hygge (the Danish word for cosiness, social connection and wellbeing) and restorative. Once you have your words to mind try and make decisions about how to spend your time this festive season in line with those feeling words. For me, that probably means turning down a few parties!

Schedule in some time for you 

Think of it like a gift to yourself, how can you schedule in some down time to relax in the run up to and over the Christmas and New Year period? It might be getting a babysitter so you and your partner can have a trip to the cinema, taking yourself out for a coffee in the middle of shopping when it gets just a little bit too hectic or lighting some candles, eating some lovely food and reading a book.

Write it out 

I love a good list for helping me feel less stressed and more organised. Doing some pre planning and just getting everything down on paper that needs attending to can help cut out some of that overwhelm. Don’t be afraid to delegate some of those tasks too, you don’t have to do it all! Similarly, setting aside some time to journal can be helpful when it comes to relaxing and figuring out what support you need to enjoy the kind of Christmas you really need.

Don’t be afraid to say no 

If you don’t want to spend half of Christmas Day travelling for hours to see other people then don’t be afraid of saying no. Think about your intention for how you’d like to feel over the festive season and if you need to say no to parties or traveling then set some boundaries. Often you can come to some kind of compromise that works for everyone, but to get there you need to speak up for how you feel.
