The link between vanilla and gorillas is simple – they share the same habitat. So when we started using vanilla from Africa’s Virunga National Park we wanted to give something back to help the park’s gorillas. We give 15% of the profits from sales of Keep Smiling Vanilla M’Gorilla to ‘Fauna & Flora International’ who are part of the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) – a coalition of conservation charities that works closely with national governments and local people to protect mountain gorillas and conserve their environment. They help those living near the gorillas to use their natural resources in a sustainable way that doesn’t damage the gorilla habitat. To find out more please check out the Booja Blog ‘Helping Others’

Vanilla consistently tops surveys and polls as the UK’s (and other countries’) favourite ice cream flavour. It may be perceived as the lesser cousin of more unusual taste combinations, but this beautifully fragrant bean – the fruit of an orchid no less – is definitely far from ‘neutral’. Sweet and creamy, vanilla has a gently woody aroma and a delicate taste that often evokes childhood memories of home baked cakes or hot summer days.

First cultivated by the Totonacs and Aztecs of South America, vanilla was introduced to Europe in the 15th Century where it was used as an additive for chocolate. It wasn’t until the early 17th Century that vanilla was used in as a flavouring in its own right but since then there’s been no looking back. The French were the first to create vanilla ice cream but by the late 19th Century it had secured its place as the ice cream flavour of choice in America and England too. Perhaps one the reasons for its lasting popularity is its incredible versatility. As well as being refreshingly delicious on its own vanilla ice cream is the perfect partner for all sorts of mouth-watering desserts from apple crumble and warm chocolate brownies to delicate cheesecake – like this lemon and coconut creation from The Naked Deli:

Nutritionally, vanilla is rich in magnesium, potassium and manganese; minerals associated with balance, healthy blood pressure levels, relaxing nervous tension and the increased release of ‘feel good’ hormones. It is a mood-boosting food which encourages the release of serotonin and dopamine and has long been regarded as an aphrodisiac. No wonder – as Ellie Goulding posted on Instagram – eating vanilla ice cream makes us feel happy!
